Crack Chasing and Joint Filling

Concrete Chasing and Joint Filling for Commercial, Retail, Industrial & Institutional Properties Throughout Ontario

Concrete Chasing and Joint Filling is an Affordable, Long Term Solution to Concrete Cracks

Concrete cracks fall into two categories: static and moving. Static cracks are hairline flaws that only affect the surface. They usually require little or no repair. Moving cracks, or active cracks, are much more serious. They are often structural and continue through the entire depth of the concrete. Once moving cracks appear, they can spread throughout the slab, causing greater damage that may eventually require full replacement of the concrete.

Concrete chasing and joint filling are an affordable, long term solution to concrete cracks.

CONCRETE CRACKING REASONS

Any poured concrete slab can become damaged over time.

  • Changes in temperature
  • Improper installation process
  • Improper sub-grade compaction
  • Insufficient spacing and sequencing of control joints
  • Not isolating new concrete from old

CHECKING THE CRACK

If the crack is equal to or wider than the width of a credit card, it’s probably a moving crack and needs to be repaired before you resurface the concrete.

STOP THE SPREAD OF CONCRETE CRACKS

Stop the spread of concrete cracks before the damage becomes irreparable. Concrete surfaces have to be properly prepared before any repair takes place. Proper repair techniques ensure that any cracks will be stopped for the long-term. The first step in doing that is to chase the crack with a grinder. Crack chasing enlarges the opening of existing cracks to make way for a better, more suitable foundation for the application of a recommended filling compound such as epoxy or other compound.

CONCRETE STAIN, CONCRETE OVERLAY AND CONCRETE DECORATION

Crack chasing is also required when preparing a concrete floor for a stain or overlay.  Before any concrete decorative procedure the concrete surface has to be prepared including repairing any cracks or damages.

CRACK CHASING AND JOINT FILLING STEPS

  • Chase / route out the crack
  • Remove all debris
  • Fill the crack
  • Install new control joints
  • Saw-cut a new control joint close to the crack to help relieve expansion and contraction stresses in the slab

CRACK STITCHING

We also offer crack stitching. We drill holes on both sides of the crack. Span the affected area with wires or U-shaped metal strips, and grout or epoxy in place. This is a highly effective method. We apply overlay over the repair so it doesn’t show through the finished surface.
